Mugaya Factory is a washing station in Kirinyaga, Kenya, respected and renowned for its consistently qualitative coffee processing. The Factory is located at the foot of Mount Kenya, at around 1700-1800 masl, where it was established in 1975. Today, through the aid of their mother company the Mutira Farmers’ Cooperative Society, it is able to support approximately 1700 smallholder farmers by sourcing coffee from them for processing. Cherries are collected at the Factory right after harvest and sorted upon arrival. Over- and underripe cherries are removed and the remainder is pulped that same day, followed by a 24-hour dry fermentation. Beans are then washed with clean water from the nearby Rwamuthambi River flowing right down from Mount Kenya and the parchment is later soaked for another 6 hours, before being laid out to dry on raised coffee beds. 90% of this lot consists of SL28 and SL34, two varieties that were developed in Kenya in the 20th century and that are slowly but surely - especially SL28 - gaining popularity in the rest of the world’s coffee producing countries.
This coffee was sourced through our importing partner Trabocca.
